South Bend Police Department Chief Ron Teachman was guest speaker at the August 2013 NRC Roundtable, a quarterly gathering of neighborhood leaders from across the city.

Teachman shared his professional history, and philosophy of law enforcement and crime prevention with representatives from 14 different South Bend neighborhood associations, along with a City of South Bend representative and NRC board members and staff.

Teachman’s presentation included an overview of the work of the city’s Anti-Violence Commission, and explained its strategic community and policing components. He appealed to neighborhood leaders to consider mentoring programs, and make the commitment to get involved in the lives of the city’s children.

Neighborhood leaders like Ty Merry, head of the South Side Neighborhood Association, and Donna Pangburn — a leader of the Historic East Wayne Street group — said they were pleased to have the opportunity to meet the chief, and to talk about crime and quality-of-life issues in their neighborhoods.

The NRC Roundtable is an opportunity for neighborhood leaders to network, share their respective neighborhood challenges and solutions, discuss community-based projects and exchange information that helps to strengthen South Bend neighborhoods. Roundtable meetings are held in various parts of the city, including the August location at the Charles Black Center on West Washington Street. Neighborhood leaders, along with those who participate in NRC leadership and training programs, are invited to participate.
